Värmland combines nature reserves, literary and art history with long cycling routes.

Nature

Värmland County has 242 nature reserves and one nature conservation area. Glaskogen is Värmland’s largest nature reserve and connects several lakes with beautiful canoeing routes; the area is therefore suitable for paddling. The nature reserve also contains 30 Swedish miles of hiking trails.

Some nature reserves in Värmland are easily accessible and have visitor facilities. The Värmland County Administrative Board’s excursion guide provides information about 38 natural attractions, including trails, rest areas and proximity to public transport. Many nature reserves have marked trails, boardwalks or birdwatching towers that make it easier to experience wetlands.

Culture

Värmland Museum preserves collections of archaeological and cultural-historical objects, art, photographs, documents and music recordings. In addition, the museum offers guided tours on Värmland’s cultural history as well as art and photography.

Mårbacka is preserved as a memorial estate; Selma Lagerlöf’s home is open to the public as part of guided tours. Between 1921 and 1923, Selma Lagerlöf had Mårbacka converted into a prestigious manor house according to plans by the renowned architect Isac Gustaf Clason. Arvika also forms part of the region’s art history: following the arrival of the first artists of the Rackstad artists’ colony in 1898, the meeting of their modern ideas with established craftsmanship created a connection between art and handicrafts.

Rottneros Park combines appealing garden design with historical and literary connections. Its diverse collection includes around 100 sculptures and reliefs; most were created by renowned Nordic sculptors. A large children’s playground and spacious areas for play and recreation add to the opportunities to enjoy art and nature there. Rottneros Park can be reached by car, train or bus.

Cycling

Vänerleden is a cycling route around Vänern, Sweden’s largest lake, approximately 640 kilometres long. It is Sweden’s sixth national cycling route. Along Vänerleden there are several cafés, cosy farm shops and restaurants with White Guide status.

Klarälvsbanan is a 90-kilometre-long, paved and car-free cycling route along a former railway line from Karlstad to Uddeholm. In the south, the route passes through open agricultural landscapes, while in the north it runs through a deep forest. Klarälvsleden is a 130-kilometre-long route that leads from the archipelago into the wilderness. Bus route 600 allows passengers to take their bicycles to Klarälvsbanan and Klarälvsleden.
