Cycling and water
Cyclists can enjoy almost 50 kilometres of cycling routes in Storfors, divided into three routes whose quality has been assured by Biking Värmland. The Stegelviksrundan is a 3.3-kilometre, red-marked cycling route in the built-up area of Storfors.
The 65-kilometre Bergslagskanalen waterway runs through the municipality of Storfors. It includes lakes, rivers, locks and man-made canals; by boat, this waterway connects Karlskoga via Storfors to Filipstad. Facilities for boaters and canoeists in Storfors include a guest harbour with free access to water and electricity, as well as a slipway.
Badsta Camping has a sandy beach with bathing jetties, restaurant facilities, a kiosk, toilets, a playground and canoe rental. The Hättälven has a paddling route with a natural water whirlpool and a route to Riddarön; from Badsta Camping, it is suitable for a one- or two-day tour.
Nature and fishing
The Baksjön nature reserve was established to promote birdlife and provide the public with better opportunities for nature studies. The two birdwatching towers at Baksjön are closed to visitors because they are considered unsafe to access.
The Fridensborgshöjden nature reserve consists of an old-growth forest dominated by spruce, with individual rocky areas covered by pine, as well as wet areas with black alder and birch. Dalstorps skogar is a forest landscape rich in boulders, with hanging lichens and mosses.
The Nykroppa-Storfors Fishing Conservation Association leases around 50 lakes and ponds from Stora Enso in the municipalities of Storfors and Filipstad. At Skärjen, special rules apply to fishing for stocked game fish, with day or annual permits available.
Culture and history
Storfors biograf has 210 seats in a large auditorium and uses a 4K projector. At the Storfors cultural centre, the culture pages provide access to music, dance, art, creative activities, cultural-historical sites and courses.
Spruthuset in Storfors houses the Värmland Museum of Fire History. The museum has collections from the entire Värmland region; visitors are allowed to touch and climb onto numerous objects and vehicles there.
Storfors kyrka was completed in 1959 and built according to plans by the architect Tor Engloo. Its exterior walls are clad in Glava slate.
At the nearby Bjurbäckens slussar, there are three lock chambers in the Bjurbäcken and an open-level lock at Källsfallet; the difference in elevation is approximately 11 metres. The former lock keeper’s house at the nearby Bjurbäckens slussar now houses a café and a small museum.
The nearby Bjurbäckens Bruksområde has a forge with roots in the 18th century. The Bruksområde also includes a mill and a mill stable, and it is possible to take a historical guided tour. The Koltorpshagen building in Storfors dates back to the 17th century.
Local heritage and cultural days are held at Hagen. The cultural-historical spectrum therefore ranges from individual buildings and industrial sites to events and the ongoing offerings of the cultural centre.
Practical information
There is limited tourist information in Storfors at the municipal building and the library. Outside staffed hours, brochures and other tourist material are available in the entrance area of the municipal building.
