Holiday apartment in Kil: Nature trails, Fryken and culture
The Skutbergsleden connects Sannerudsvallen in Kil with the Skutbergets motionscentral on Lake Vänern over a distance of 24.3 kilometres. 1.5 kilometres of the route run through Kil Municipality. The Frykenleden provides another connection: the 19.5-kilometre hiking trail runs between Sannerudsvallen in Kil and Nilsby. Since the 12th century, a pilgrim trail has also run along the eastern side of the Fryken lakes from Kil to Torsby.
Trails through nature and the landscape
The Skutbergsleden runs through the Kilsravinerna nature reserve, which lies south of National Road 61. In summer, the area has lush vegetation and high humidity; several trails can be explored in the nature reserve. The Frykenleden passes key biotopes, archaeological monuments and cultural-historical remains.
The ravines of Apertin are also among the area's notable natural features. They were designated a natural monument in 1936, making them the first protected natural area in the region. You can walk there among stately deciduous trees, hazel shrubs and ferns. On Rennstadsnipan, a three-kilometre circular trail leads to the summit and around the mountain. The summit has a lookout tower, a wind shelter and a fire pit; from the lookout tower, there are views over lakes, forests and mountains.
History and culture
Apertin Manor, with its surrounding buildings, park and avenue, is protected as a listed building under the Cultural Heritage Act. The Frykstad-Clara Elfs jernväg represents another historical focus: it was Sweden's first railway for public transport and ran between Lake Fryken in Kil and Lyckan in Forshaga.
At the southern end of Lake Fryken lies the Frykstad Clara Elfs järnvägsmuseum. Its old carriage shed houses carriages and other memorabilia from Sweden's first railway, which operated from 1849 to 1871. The burial ground with 95 burial mounds is also a notable historical landmark; it is Värmland's largest burial ground.
Active days and the waters of Fryken
Frykstahöjden has an 18-hole disc golf course. There is also a pump track, which is open to all types of cyclists. Frykstahöjden has an eight-kilometre mountain-bike trail. It starts at Frykstastugan and follows Ömansmilen in the opposite direction of travel.
In Fryksta, at the southern end of Lake Fryken, there is a bathing area with a basic playground and a toilet. In summer, bulls, cows and calves of the Highland Cattle breed graze at the Djurhägn/grillplats in Lövenstrand.
