Kil – Hiking Trails, Frykstahöjden and History
Accommodation in Kil
Kil is a versatile destination for anyone who wants to combine active days, scenic experiences and Swedish history. Around the town, you will find trails of varying lengths, viewpoints, winter activities and insights into the region’s past. This allows you to tailor your travel plans to the interests of your group and, when searching for a holiday apartment or holiday home, take your preferred holiday focus into account.
Hiking trails for different daily itineraries
The 19.5-kilometre Frykenleden hiking trail runs between Sannerudsvallen in Kil and Nilsby. It offers a longer route for travel planning, while Kils naturstig, at 3.2 kilometres, is considerably more compact. This circular trail begins at the former OK-stugan and leads through Dikartorpsravinen, a biotope-protected area, as well as through a broadleaf plantation and meadow areas. The different landscapes give the walk a changing character throughout.
Those who prefer a shorter loop can take the length of the trail into account more easily when planning their day. Falletleden is approximately 5.5 kilometres long and follows the ravine system of Pickerudsbäcken. At Frykstahöjden, the illuminated trail system comprises two routes of 2.6 kilometres and 0.8 kilometres. The distance information helps you choose a suitable order for your activities without having to set the hike to a specific duration. Frykstahöjden is within walking distance from Kils samhälle.
Frykstahöjden in summer and winter
Frykstahöjden combines several opportunities for an active stay. At the slalom slope, there is a view over Nedre Fryken. In winter, the Frykstahöjden area offers both downhill skiing and cross-country skiing. Frykstabacken has three downhill runs and a park. The longest run is 260 metres long and has a vertical drop of 60 metres. This means that your travel plans can be adapted differently depending on the season: in summer, the trails and landscape take centre stage, while in winter, two different winter sports are added.
Cyclists will also find specific destinations. The 8-kilometre mountain bike trail begins at Frykstastugan. In addition, the pump track is suitable for all types of cyclists. For a group with different preferences, cycling, hiking and winter sports can therefore each form separate daily activities, without everyone having to choose the same activity.
History and culture in Kil
The Frykstad-Clara Elfs jernväg is part of the region’s history. It was Sweden’s first railway for public transport and ran between Lake Fryken near Kil and Lyckan in Forshaga. The Skolmuseum displays an interior from the oldest school in the municipality of Kil, dating from 1854. Another historical landmark is St Kils kyrka: it was built in 1850 and burned down in 1929. These places complement the natural experiences with specific insights into transport, education and local history.
