Venta del Moro between the Cabriel Gorges and wine traditions

Venta del Moro lies on the Valencian left bank of the Río Cabriel. The Hoces del Cabriel are located entirely within the municipality and shape the natural landscape with an impressive scenery of cliffs and winding rock walls. Distinctive rocky pinnacles along the Río Cabriel are inhabited by eagles and other birds of prey. The Comunitat Valenciana is also home to one of the largest remaining intact woodland areas, where deer, Iberian ibex and wild boar can be found.

Nature

The visitor centre for the Hoces del Cabriel Natural Park is located in Venta del Moro. Its exhibition focuses on the Río Cabriel and its ecosystem. The PR-CV 344 is a circular hiking route starting at the Fuente la Oliva recreation area in Venta del Moro. From there, it leads into the Hoces del Cabriel, passes through the Hoz de Vicente and is of geological and environmental interest. The natural park also includes the blue route from Venta del Moro to Puente de Vadocañas.

Culture

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de Loreto in Venta del Moro holds the status of a Bien de Relevancia Local, a locally significant heritage asset. The Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen de Las Monjas is designed in a Gothic-inspired style. Local traditions include the celebration of the Mayos on the night of 30 April, featuring musical processions through the town.

On Easter Sunday, the Judas tradition is observed in Venta del Moro. The Quintos make a figure out of fabric and straw and hang it from the church tower. A passageway dating from around 1570 has an unusual structure in the form of a single large-span arch and is set in a natural environment.

In Venta del Moro’s historic centre, the rehabilitated cave winery of Jaime Latorre is located on Calle Huertos. It is a small winery dating from the mid-19th century. The extensive municipality also contains numerous underground cellars connected to houses, traditionally used for producing and storing wine.

Wine

Bodega Neleman is an organic and vegan winery in Casas del Rey, in Venta del Moro and in the Hoces del Cabriel Natural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The winery offers seasonal vineyard visits as well as wine tastings throughout the year. During Venta del Moro’s summer celebrations, the Certamen de Vinos y Exhibición Gastronómica takes place in August, offering tastings of wines and dishes from the region.
