Castielfabib between Castle, Rock Art and Nature Trails

Castielfabib Castle has Roman origins and was expanded during Muslim rule. On the main square stands an emblematic 15th-century building: a Renaissance loggia opens on the ground floor, while inside there is a decorated wooden ceiling.

Culture and History

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles is a fortified church and is legally protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest. At the same time, it is regarded as a reference point for Gothic and Renaissance art; it has a freestanding 14th-century bell tower. The ruins of the former San Guillermo de Castielfabib convent preserve the remains of its former church.

The Abrigo de las Lomas de Abril is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1998. It is the only group of Levantine rock paintings in the Rincón de Ademuz.

Holy Week in Castielfabib combines religious and pagan elements. These include human bell swinging and planting poplar trees in the square.

A festival held at the end of August fills the old town with torches, music and artistic performances, highlighting local creativity and folklore.

Nature

El Rodeno is designated as a plant micro-reserve and is home to rare protected plant species such as Asplenium septentrionale and Halimium umbellatum.

Muela de los Tres Reinos was designated a municipal natural area on 5 September 2014. In the nature park, various trails lead to natural springs, caves and viewpoints.

The reefs of Arroyo Cerezo are bioconstructions more than 150 million years old, made up of corals, sponges and cyanobacteria from the Upper Jurassic. A viewpoint was recently established for viewing them.

A hiking trail leads through the Site of Community Importance LIC Rius del Racó d’Ademús. Its riparian forests provide a habitat for otters, brown trout and native freshwater crayfish.

Trails and Activities

The local Huellas del Ebrón circular trail is 5.9 kilometres long and takes approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes. The “Asalto a la Villa” via ferrata is rated K2 and takes approximately 30 minutes.

The via ferrata includes a suspension bridge. The approach takes about five minutes from the information sign on the CV-479 road before a tunnel.

The guided tour of Lomas de Abril is approximately 3 kilometres long and has a low difficulty level. Participants must have their own vehicle.

The different trail lengths and time estimates, as well as the various activity types, can be compared directly with one another.

Sightseeing

Guided tours in Castielfabib take place by prior reservation through the Tourist Info Rincón de Ademuz. The castle can be visited by prior arrangement as part of an on-demand guided tour.
