Sumacàrcer on the Xúquer – Hiking Trails, Culture and Festivals

Nature and Trails

The Eco-River Trail runs along the Xúquer River and is suitable for walking or running. The Senda Camí de la Costa runs along the rocky cliffs of the Barranco del Llop and through one of the most significant wooded areas in the municipality.

The Senda de la Tosca runs along a water channel from the Fuente de la Tosca to the Plaza de l’Era. Two thirds of the route are easy, while the final section is considerably more uneven and includes steep inclines. The different types of trail can therefore be distinguished by length, route and difficulty, without offering the same hiking experience.

One hiking route in Sumacàrcer takes approximately three hours and 45 minutes and leads to circular stone lime kilns about two metres high. Lime was produced in them for mortar or for painting houses.

The Senda Camí de la Costa also offers views of Sumacàrcer and part of the Xúquer Valley.

River Landscape

Within the municipality of Sumacàrcer, the Xúquer carries its greatest volume of water and shapes a diverse landscape. Around Sumacàrcer, the river offers opportunities for fishing, swimming, canoeing and hiking.

Illa de l’Esgoletja is a recreational area by the river with picnic facilities, children’s play areas and an opportunity to swim, weather permitting.

Culture and History

Castell de Penyarroja is listed as an asset of special cultural interest, a Bien de Interés Cultural, in the Monument category of the Valencian Cultural Heritage Inventory. Castell de Penya-roja dates from the 10th to the 14th century and can be reached from the town via a convenient, well-signposted footpath.

An Ethnological Museum has been established in the restored interior rooms. The crypt contains the pantheon of the Counts of Orgaz and Sumacàrcer, who are buried there.

The parish cemetery of Sumacàrcer was established between 1918 and 1922 and lies below the mountain of Castell de Penyarroja. The parish cemetery offers panoramic views of the Xúquer, the mountains of the Caroig Massif and the orange groves.

Traditions and Cuisine

A Moros y Cristianos parade takes place on the last weekend of August. The patron saint festivities in honour of the Santísimo Cristo de la Morera take place on the first weekend of September.

Les orelletes are considered Sumacàrcer’s most typical dish.

The chapel preserves a Gothic image of Christ from the 15th century.
