Benisanó – History, Festivals and Holiday Apartments

Benisanó combines historic buildings with festive events. Every year, on the first or second weekend of February, the Setmana del Castell takes place in Benissanó. It includes a medieval market or various historical reenactments inside and outside the Castillo de Benissanó. Festivals and Local Traditions

Sant Antoni del porquet is celebrated on 17 January. During the festival, traditional breads are blessed, animals are blessed and the popular Rotllets de Sant Antoni are sampled publicly. The patron-saint festivities of Benissanó begin towards the end of August and continue until 10 September. They honour the Virgen del Fundamento on 7 September, the Virgen de los Dolores on 9 September and San José on the 10th. For scheduling purposes, a single festival day, a February weekend and a longer sequence of celebrations in late summer can be considered separately. Culture and History

The Castillo de Benissanó is a castle-palace that combined a fortress with an aristocratic residence. It was built in the second half of the 15th century on the site of an earlier Arab alquería called Benixanut. The Murallas de Benissanó were built between the 13th and 14th centuries and are older than the Castillo de Benissanó. The former underground areas of the Castillo de Benissanó are now arranged as cellar rooms. The present parish church, Iglesia Parroquial de los Santos Reyes, was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style.

The older walls, the Castillo built as a combination of fortress and aristocratic residence, and the present parish church rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style differ in their construction period, function and present appearance; the former underground areas of the Castillo are now arranged as cellar rooms.

Sightseeing and Buildings

The Castillo de Benissanó can be visited on Saturdays from 17:00 to 21:00 and on Sundays from 11:00 to 14:00. The two weekend time slots can be incorporated separately into an individual visiting schedule. The three gateways of the Murallas de Benissanó – Portal de Llíria, Portal de Bétera and Portal de Valencia – have not retained their doors, but have preserved their round arches or battlements.
