Nature and Coast
The Paraje Natural Municipal Parpalló-Borrell covers 549.50 hectares and has been protected by the Generalitat Valenciana since 2004. Visitors can explore the flora and fauna along designated routes and paths. In this natural area, the focus is therefore both on the protected landscape and on observing its plants and wildlife.
At Playa de l'Ahuir, wooden walkways protect the dunes and allow access to the beach on foot from Gandia or Xeraco. Nature trails and coastal landscapes therefore form two clearly distinct focal points: one leads into the protected natural area, while the other leads to a stretch of beach with dunes.
Culture and History
The Palau Ducal combines Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Gothic architectural elements. The surviving remains of the Murallas de Gandia include towers and sections of wall incorporated into houses in the historic centre. History is evident here both in a single building and in traces integrated into the modern urban environment.
The Museu Arqueològic de Gandia (MAGA) is housed in the former Hospital de San Marcos, founded by Alfonso el Viejo in the 14th century. The permanent exhibition focuses on the prehistory of La Safor and covers, among other topics, Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers as well as Neolithic farmers and herders.
The Cova del Parpalló contains one of Europe's most important archaeological sites from the Upper Palaeolithic. MAGA also displays archaeological artefacts from the Cova del Parpalló. In this way, the site of a discovery and the museum presentation of its archaeological evidence come together.
Fallas and Fira i Festes
The Museo Fallero offers an immersive overview of the Fallas festival. Its permanent exhibition includes original traditional costumes and Fallas accessories. The museum thus provides an insight into festival culture, while the Fira i Festes moves the celebrations into public spaces.
Gandía celebrates the Fira i Festes between the end of September and the beginning of October in honour of the city's patron saint, San Francisco de Borja. During the Fira i Festes, themed markets, folk performances, traditional events, music concerts and theatre performances for all age groups take place over four days in the streets and squares of the old town. Nature, archaeological history, museum content and a multi-day city festival thus provide different focal points for planning a trip.
