Grau De Gandia – Playa Nord, Dunes and Port

In Grau De Gandia, Playa Nord is a city beach more than 3 kilometres long, with 300,000 m² of fine sand. To the north, Playa de l’Auir stretches between Carrer Ribera Baixa and the Vaca River. The officially designated and signposted naturist beach is described as one of the few remaining unspoilt beaches in the Mediterranean, with the highest level of protection existing in the Valencian Community; raised walkways lead through the dune landscape there.

Coast and paths

The first line of the beach is an open area reserved for pedestrians, with a wide, level surface without differences in elevation or architectural barriers. At Playa Nord, there are sometimes facilities where windsurfing boards can be rented and light-sailing courses can be taken. A cycle path at Playa Nord is used for running, skating and cycling. La Marina is a public bus service connecting Gandia with the beach.

Nature

Marjal de Gandia is a Mediterranean coastal wetland and is listed both in the Valencian Community’s wetland catalogue and in the Natura 2000 network. It is home to biological communities with high biodiversity, as well as bird species such as mallards and herons. Ullals consists of small, circular and sometimes deep ponds formed by numerous springs; the Ullals wetland is equipped with walkways and paths for visitors. Aula Natura is a recreational facility and serves as an interpretation centre for the surroundings of Marjal de Gandia.

Port and culture

The Port of Gandia has several areas for public use, water sports and fishing. The Tinglados del Puerto have been recognised as Assets of Local Relevance since 2018. Tinglado No. 15 houses the Museo del Mar, which contains more than one hundred scale reproductions of historic and modern ships. The Iglesia de San Nicolás by the sea is one of the most representative examples of 20th-century religious architecture and a landmark of modern architecture.

The fish market is managed by the fishing guild of Gandia, which organises fish auctions for wholesalers, fishmongers and restaurants. A guided tour of the Grau and the Port of Gandia is available throughout the year by prior reservation and lasts 1.5 to 2 hours.
