Discover Simat de la Valldigna

The Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de la Valldigna in Simat de la Valldigna is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1298 by King Jaume II El Just and inhabited until 1835. Its architecture combines Gothic elements from the 14th century with Baroque sections from the 17th and 18th centuries. The monastery offers a guided tour with commentary, during which participants learn about daily life as well as the building's historical and artistic value.

Culture and history

The Antiga Mesquita de la Xara was built around the 15th century and later converted into a church dedicated to Saint Anne. It is considered one of the most important mosques in the Comunitat Valenciana and evidence of the Muslim religion in the former Kingdom of Valencia. In the centre of Simat de la Valldigna, the Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel also stands: a Baroque church from the 17th century built over an earlier mosque.

Hiking

The Camí dels Burros (PR-CV 51) starts at the Font Gran in Simat and leads to the summit of Penyalba. It is designated as a 7.9 km hike with a duration of 3 hours and 30 minutes and a moderate difficulty level.

The PR-CV 50 Senda del Toro follows traditional paths through the Sierra del Toro to its main summits and offers views over a large part of the Valldigna Valley. The route is an 11.80 km circular trail.

The Ruta dels Monestirs is a tourist trail connecting the Monastery of Santa María de la Valldigna in Simat with La Murta in Alzira, Aigües Vives in Carcaixent, Sant Jeroni de Cotalba in Alfauir and Corpus Christi in Llutxent. The hiking section of the Ruta dels Monestirs is the GR-236: it is more than 90 km long, follows historic paths, starts at Gandia railway station and ends at Alzira railway station.
