Otos: Hiking Trails, Sundials and Valencian Art

Nature and Hiking

Otos is a starting point for hikes to the Benicadell. From Otos, hiking trails lead to l’Ombria del Benicadell, where the ruins of Castell de Carbonera are located.

The SL-CV 10 hiking trail “Otos i el Paisatge Protegit de l’Ombria del Benicadell” begins on C/ de Sant Roc in Otos. As a circular route, it is 9.40 kilometres long and includes some sections where the outbound and return routes overlap; an elevation gain of 440 metres is indicated for both the ascent and the descent. The route passes the Nevera de Tormo and goes near Cueva Coleto. The trail is promoted by the Ayuntamiento de Otos and has a positive quality-control status.

Culture

The Route dels Rellotges de sol began in 2005 as a project to create eight sundials by Valencian artists. With numerous sundials distributed throughout the town, it forms an open-air museum; the collection in Otos currently comprises more than thirty sundials.

At the Palau d’Otos, the permanent Antoni Miró Collection presents a monographic, chronological tour through the artist’s various creative periods or series. The collection comprises more than 200 works. On Sundays, it can be visited together with the guided Route dels Rellotges de sol.

History

The church “L’Església de la Immaculada Concepció” was built between 1721 and 1724 and consecrated in 1742. It has three naves and a dome over the crossing.

The Palau del marqués de Sant Josep was built in 1725 by Joan Nunyes. The Baroque palace consists of a cube-shaped main building and a tower attached to the rear.

The Ermita de la Virgen de los Dolores is considered an 18th-century chapel with romantically designed Stations of the Cross and a main altar.

Festivals and Culinary Tradition

Otos’s patron saint festivals take place from 6 to 8 August in honour of Cristo de la Fe, Santos de la Piedra and Inmaculada Concepción.

Dia de les Cassoletes is celebrated on the Thursday before Carnival and focuses on pig’s ear and pig’s snout.

For your own travel planning, the main areas can be weighted separately: hiking follows the information on route length and elevation gain, art and architectural history are reflected in different locations and building forms, while festival traditions are tied to set dates. This keeps route information, sightseeing content and calendar dates clearly distinct from one another.
