Benetússer: Mills, Paths and Festivals in the Valencian Community

Culture and History

Benetússer is home to the Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora del Socorro. It is one of the town’s sights, an example of Catholic religious architecture in the Valencian Community, and is currently classified as a building with integral protection under urban planning law.

The Museu Història de Benetússer is a public municipal museum open to the public. The Molí de Favara, a rice mill from the 17th century, also houses the Museu Arqueològic with a permanent exhibition.

The Molí de Benetússer dates from the Middle Ages, probably the early 14th century. Another historic trace is the Puerta de Favara: the Mannerist structure once formed the entrance to the gardens of the palace that has since disappeared.

The Molino Arrocero de la Estación was built in 1921. It consists of a three-storey rice mill with two attached, symmetrically designed building sections. The present building is a Neo-Gothic brick structure; its rear may contain elements from the 14th century.

Landscape and Historic Paths

The various branches of the Acequia Favara irrigate the plain, run beneath Benetússer’s fully built-up town centre and channel their water into the Albufera. The waterworks are therefore just as much part of the town’s history as the visible mills and buildings.

The Camí Nou, the former royal road from Madrid to Valencia, follows the same route as the Vía Augusta within the municipality of Benetússer. Historically, Benetússer was located on the royal road from Xàtiva, or on the royal road from Valencia to Madrid, which is now called Avenida del Camí Nou; this location facilitated good road and railway connections.

Two types of livestock trails cross the municipality: the Vereda del Cementerio de Valencia, which follows the old road from Picasent, and the Colada del Azagador de Alfafar and the Colada del Azagador de l’Orba.

The Camino de Santiago de Levante also begins in Valencia. On the first stage from Valencia to Algemesí, there is a stop at the Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora del Socorro in Benetússer.

Festivals and Community Traditions

During the Fallas, the streets of Benetússer fill with music, fire and colour. The Cremà takes place on 19 March.

La Pasión has been listed as a tradition in Benetússer since 1949 and has been recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Provincial since 1967. La Pasión is considered an open-air performance of scenes from the final days of Jesus’s life. The settings are Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Plaza de la Iglesia and Calle Mayor; residents, volunteers and amateur actors take part.

The Corpus Christi celebrations traditionally take place on the first Sunday of Benetússer’s Fiestas Mayores, with numerous local institutions and associations participating. The Festes Majors 2026 include a celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos. This deeply rooted tradition once again fills the streets with music, colours, festive dress and a celebratory atmosphere.
