Vallanca: Nature Trails, Cultural Heritage and Holiday Apartments

The Septenario de la Virgen de Santerón makes Vallanca visible as a place of a rare, deeply rooted tradition: it takes place every seven years in September. The pilgrimage leads from Vallanca to the Ermita de Santerón in the municipal area of Algarra in the province of Cuenca; from 16 to 26 September, it includes collecting the statue of the Virgin, carrying it to Vallanca, as well as a novena and processions there. Since its beginnings, the Septenario has been celebrated without interruption for more than 300 years. The seven-year cycle and the clearly defined September period provide culturally interested travellers with clear chronological guidance.

Culture and History

The townscape is dominated by the Iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, a Baroque building with an elongated floor plan, a wide central nave and six interconnected side chapels. Its interior features white-and-black sgraffito decoration, considered particularly well preserved in the local area. The present church replaced an older place of worship and acquired its final form at the end of the 17th century.

In the hamlet of Negrón, which belongs to Vallanca, you can visit the Franciscan church Iglesia de San Antonio de Padua, dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. Negrón is also a hamlet belonging to Vallanca with a traditional washhouse. The Molino de la Tosca is a restored former grain mill, while the Cueva del Hocino is a natural cavity in tuff stone and was formerly a meeting place.

In the El Cerro de Vallanca area stands the Barraca de Josezón, a large dry-stone structure. The Ruta de las Barracas links traditional shelters that were formerly used by hikers and especially shepherds to find protection from the cold and a place to spend the night.

Trails and Landscape

The Ruta de los Árboles Monumentales is approximately 4.5 kilometres long, takes about one hour and 30 minutes, has a low level of difficulty and is designed as a circular route. As an interpretive hiking trail, it passes through the Umbria de la Huerta natural area along the Bohigues River and over El Plano mountain. Long-lived black pines, Spanish junipers and walnut trees grow along the route.

The Ruta de las plantas medicinales in Vallanca offers guided botanical tours every weekend throughout the year. During this activity, you can identify plant species and learn about their properties; advance booking is required. The Ruta de Bohilgues y de Val (PR-CV 131.6) begins in Vallanca and offers views of the Hoz del río Bohilgues.
