Between rivers and orange groves

Beniarjó lies on completely flat terrain at the confluence of the Serpis and Vernisa rivers. Orange groves surround the town, and the Séquia dels March continues to supply Beniarjó’s irrigated fields with water. Old town and history

Beniarjó’s origins date back to a Muslim alquería, meaning a rural settlement dependent on Bairén Castle. Beniarjó was also the birthplace of the medieval Valencian poet Ausiàs March.

Ausiàs March and the Sant Marc festivals

The former Castell-Palau de Beniarjó is also known as the Casa de la Senyoria. Pere March and later Ausiàs March initially lived there. The Festa de Sant Marc dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries in its origins and is considered a festival of local tourist interest.

Traditional festival customs include the traditional “Ball de la Bandera”, a tradition dating from the 16th century. It commemorates the martyrdom of Saint Mark and opens the procession through the town’s streets. During the traditional “Caixes de Sant Marc”, young people from Beniarjó play drums and tabalets to announce the festival.

Literature and routes

The connection with Ausiàs March continues through the “Senyoriu d’Ausiàs March” poetry prize, which has been awarded in Beniarjó since the 1980s. In Beniarjó, the “Camins de Beniarjó-Gandia” route leads to Plaça d’Ausiàs March, which is assigned as the third stop.

For active days, the Ruta dels Monestirs includes not only a road option for travelling to the monasteries but also the officially designated GR-236 hiking route. Anyone wishing to explore the monasteries on a hike should choose the GR-236; the road option, on the other hand, is intended for travelling there. The two options therefore differ in their means of transport. For a day visiting the monasteries, you can therefore decide in advance between the road route and the officially designated hiking route. Choosing the type of route is consequently part of the practical planning for the monastery trail.
