Discover Xirivella: Church, Old Town and Huerta

Xirivella’s most important building is considered to be the parish church Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Salud. It dates from the 17th century and has a Latin-cross floor plan, a bell tower and side chapels.

Culture

Xirivella’s old town preserves a street layout of Arab origin, with narrow streets lined by some old houses. The façades of the buildings feature numerous ceramic altarpieces from the 18th and 19th centuries; the Stations of the Cross beneath them depict various scenes from Holy Week. La Closa is a restored 14th-century building in the former Cap de Baix. The restored Casa del Dau also dates from the 14th century; rent payments to the Order of Calatrava were made there. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Salud is a small religious building with a simple white façade. According to local tradition, it stands at the place where the image that gave it its name is said to have been found.

Landscape

The Huerta landscape surrounds Xirivella. Its agricultural heritage includes irrigation wells, farmhouses and traditional cebere structures in which onions were stored. This heritage can be explored on foot along a route or during a walk. This provides different ways of exploring the area for planning a day: narrow old-town streets, religious buildings and paths through the agriculturally shaped surroundings.
