L'Olleria – Churches, Sierra Grossa and Regional Cuisine

L'Olleria lies at the foot of the Sierra Grossa. A special testament to the town is the Church of Santa Maria Magdalena: it is classified as a BIC (Asset of Cultural Interest) and is one of the few surviving fortified churches.

Culture and History

The Church of Santa Maria Magdalena was built over an earlier mosque. Casa de la Vila combines Late Gothic and Renaissance styles. Architecturally, the building is considered one of the oldest Valencian town halls in this style.

Casa Santonja, formerly Palau del Marau, is classified as a BIC, is more than 200 years old and is the only building in the town with a noble coat of arms. The house features significant wall paintings with extensive iconography. A Roman funerary inscription is a tomb epigraph dedicated by the Roman citizen Lucius Furrio Murro to his daughter, who died at the age of 14.

The Church and Sanctuary of Madre de Dios de Loreto preserves a large Counter-Reformation church that emerged from the first Dominican monastery in L'Olleria, founded around 1579. The Teatro Cervantes was formerly a “Pòsit-Almodí”, which supplied the population with wheat and other grain in times of scarcity or supply crises.

The Hermitage of San Cristóbal dates from the 12th or 13th century; the hermitage and its surroundings are of great archaeological value. The Monastery of San José y Santa Ana, also known as the Convent of the Augustinian Nuns, is a cloistered monastery of the Order of Discalced Augustinian Nuns. The Museo de Capuchinos presents a museographic collection about the life, history and activities of the Capuchin friars of the monastery in L'Olleria.

Nature and Activities

The Mirador de la Creueta de L'Olleria is located at 515 metres above sea level in the Sierra Grossa. It is accessible as a viewpoint and recreational area and is equipped with benches, a picnic table and waste bins. Cycling is possible in the mountainous landscape around L'Olleria. The Rodat woodland has picnic areas and paella grilling facilities.

The various themes each place their own emphasis in L'Olleria: the Mirador de la Creueta and Rodat represent landscape and activities, while the churches, monasteries, museum and historic houses bring together the town's history from several periods.
