Dos Aguas – among dinosaur tracks, caves and mountain landscapes

The ichnological site of Dos Aguas comprises around 50 mapped dinosaur tracks, including a main trackway with approximately 27 footprints. Together with Tambuc (Millares), the ichnological site of Dos Aguas is one of the approximately 80-million-year-old records of the existence of dinosaurs before their sudden disappearance at the end of the Cretaceous period.

Nature and Geography

The entire municipal area of Dos Aguas is mountainous; the Sierra del Ave extends to the north. The municipality contains numerous forests covered with pine trees and other conifers. Over a long stretch, the Júcar River forms the boundary between Dos Aguas and Catadau, Tous, Millares and Cortes de Pallás, and runs mostly through a narrow, highly winding riverbed. Dos Aguas also has caves where visitors can practise caving, or speleology. History and Archaeology

Cueva de la Cocina is regarded as one of the important sites for studying the sequence of the Late Mesolithic in Mediterranean Iberia. The settlement and use of Cueva de la Cocina in Dos Aguas have been interpreted on the basis of archaeological layers using chemical methods. The municipal area of Dos Aguas contains caves with rock paintings, including Cueva de La Cocina, Cinto la Ventana and La Cueva de las Maravillas.

The Torre de Vilaragut dates from the 12th century and is the only surviving part of the former castle of Dos Aguas. The Torre de Vilaragut is protected under Spanish legislation for the preservation of historic heritage. The parish church, “Iglesia Parroquial de la Virgen del Rosario”, dates from the 16th century.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The patron saint festivals of Dos Aguas are celebrated in August in honour of the Virgen del Rosario and San Roque. The festival in honour of San Antonio Abad, the patron saint of animals, is celebrated in Dos Aguas in January with traditional bonfires. The San Juan festival is celebrated in June; it is a traditional festival marking the beginning of summer, during which Rollo is typically eaten.

Regional Cuisine

Gazpacho manchego is one of the local dishes of Dos Aguas. Turrón de almendra y cacahuete is one of the typical sweet treats of Dos Aguas.
