Gestalgar: Castle Ruins, Cultural Route and Hiking Trails

Culture and History

Castillo de los Murones is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural and is a Muslim fortress dating from the 12th century. Its ruins preserve the enclosing structures of the complex; the only surviving building is the cistern in the castle courtyard. The Iglesia Parroquial de la Purísima Concepción is an 18th-century neoclassical religious building.

The Palacio de los Condes de l'Alcudia y Gestalgar, also known as Casa Señorial and Torre de los Condes de l’Alcúdia, is a 17th-century palace where the local lords lived.

Landscape and Rock Art

The Los Calicantos Aqueduct has two visible sections: one is carved into the rock, while the other was excavated. The excavated section is approximately 30 metres long and has an overflow channel. The remains of Presa Vieja date from the early 20th century.

In the Área Recreativa de la Peña María recreational area, a large mulberry tree provides shade. There is water from one of Gestalgar’s most important springs, as well as stone tables and benches.

The rock paintings in the Abrigo de las Clochas consist of depictions belonging to Levantine, macro-schematic and schematic art. The two rock shelters lie in the Barranco de las Colochas or Clochas gorge between Pico de Santa María and Pico del Burgal.

The Ermita Santos Abdón y Senén has an atrium with arches, a bell gable and an outdoor area with the Stations of the Cross and small chapels. The Sima de la Tierra de Roya contains, among other features, stalactites and stalagmites; access is restricted to specialists, particularly cavers, although the key can be requested from the town hall.

Trails

The Ruta Familiar is an approximately 4.5-kilometre circular route with an estimated duration of two hours. The PR-CV 290 hiking trail crosses the municipal areas of Gestalgar, Sot de Chera and Chulilla and connects places that are close to one another but separated by roads.

A cultural route in Gestalgar has an explanatory information board at every stop; there are 15 boards in total. A bathing area in Gestalgar is designated as a “playa continental”, meaning a continental beach. The information on the circular route, duration and connection between several municipal areas provides different reference points for personal planning.

Festivals and Cuisine

The patron saint’s festivities in honour of San Blas are celebrated on 2 February and include a Eucharistic service, the distribution of small candles, Vaquillas, the Toro embolado and dances. Gestalgar’s traditional cuisine includes Arroz con caricas, Arroz con bierzas, Olla “sulsia”, Gazpacho and Ajo arriero.
