History and Architectural Heritage

The Palacio fortaleza del Señorío de Alginet is listed as a monument in the Inventario General del Patrimonio Cultural Valenciano. The Castell dels Cabanyelles in Alginet was built in the 16th century. Its flanking towers were later removed to make way for the town hall.

The parish church of Alginet was built between 1654 and 1699 on the site of an older church dating from 1330. Its bell tower and chapel of Communion date from the 18th century. The Ermita de Sant Josep on the outskirts of Alginet dates from the 19th century and contains a valuable altarpiece.

Landscape and Rural Traces

The Torre Luengo stands isolated among orange groves and has lost its appearance as a defensive fortification. Alginet also has a typical farmhouse with a cart entrance, an animal stall and a hayloft. These different architectural forms can be considered separate themes within the local history.

Festivals and Stages

Alginet’s patron saint festivities take place in the second half of August. The programme includes Vaquetes, workshops, children’s activities, réveil processions, communal dinners and evening events. Sant Antoni is one of the most traditional and popular festivals in Alginet. The festival preserves the traditional blessing of animals; it also includes a Correfoc along Carrer Sant Antoni.

The Mostra de Teatre Amateur Vila d'Alginet began in 2007 and presents four amateur theatre groups every Saturday in October. In July, the Sociedad Artística Musical organises the Villa de Alginet Orchestra Festival. For planning purposes, the cultural events can be distinguished by music, theatre and festival traditions. The various formats appeal to different types of cultural interest without limiting Alginet’s events calendar to a single season.

Outside the summer, the Teatre Modern in Alginet offers a regular programme of cinema and amateur theatre.
