Algar: River, Festivals and Paths to the Dam

Algar is located on the Palancia River. The Festes Patronals in honour of the Mare de Déu de la Mercé, Sant Pere Nolasc and Sant Ramon Nonat take place every year on the weekend closest to 24 September.

Algar offers riverside landscapes, paths, historic buildings and local festival traditions. This creates not one uniform programme of excursions, but a selection of nature experiences, local history, film connections and community-oriented events.

Nature and Paths

The Algar Reservoir, also known as the Algar dam reservoir, is about a 20-minute walk from the town centre. The Paseo del Amor, a promenade with views, begins next to the old public washhouses. It follows a well-maintained path accessible to everyone from the centre of Algar to the dam.

The Cordel de la Rambla de Azuebar is a local hiking trail about 5 km long that passes through Algar. The Ruta dels Aljubs leads to five water reservoirs built in the first half of the 20th century. The Els Planets recreational area in Algar has barbecue facilities, stone tables and benches, and running water. You can compare the different types of routes by walking time, length and permitted use. This makes it possible to view shorter walking sections, a longer local path and a route with several historic water reservoirs as different focal points. The Vía Verde also expands this selection with its own form of transport.

Culture and History

The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes is an 18th-century church with a stone façade. The Arab cistern of Algar, also known as the Aljibe, has been carefully restored. The present-day Casa de la Cultura is located in the former house of the Baron of Algar.

A Ruta del Cine has been established for Algar, taking visitors through all the filming locations of this film drama. The stations mentioned combine different approaches to architectural history, local history and film connections. You can give these cultural highlights different priorities when planning your own visit. The cultural points of interest remain separate stops alongside the paths and festivals.

Festivals and Further Paths

During the San Antonio festival, residents and visitors roast meat and sausages over a large fire. The festival traditions thus provide a different focus from the quieter paths to water structures, viewpoints and historic buildings. Together with the patron saint’s festival, they show a local side that is not limited to landscapes and buildings.

The Vía Verde de Ojos Negros can be used on foot, by bicycle or in a wheelchair; individual ramps outside the original route alignment are excluded. This means that different types of use are available for personal selection, without every route having to share the same character.
