Porquera de los Infantes combines sacred architecture, evidence carved into the rock and a clearly recognizable townscape. The individual sites are thematically close to one another, but remain distinct in their history and design.
Culture
The church of Porquera de los Infantes is dedicated to Santa María de la O and dates essentially from the 18th century. Its 15th-century Gothic portal is decorated with archivolts. Inside there is a Romanesque baptismal font created by a local master in the 13th century. Thus, the same church brings together architectural history and handcrafted details from different centuries.
The necropolis of San Millán is a rock monument of pre-Romanesque origin at the entrance to Porquera de los Infantes, in the Eras de San Millán area. Near the town center, in the San Millán area, lies the medieval necropolis with almost twenty anthropomorphic graves carved into a sandstone outcrop, including several children's graves. The necropolis was connected to the now-vanished temple of San Millán. The site therefore preserves both the visible graves and the memory of a sacred complex that no longer survives.
San Román is a rock hermitage at the foot of Monte Bernorio in the surroundings of Porquera de los Infantes. Together with Santa María de la O and San Millán, it forms another distinct point of reference in the local sacred landscape.
Townscape
The houses of Porquera de los Infantes are built from dressed stone and rubble masonry and arranged radially around the square. In the town center there is a large water basin with a fountain and, in the immediate vicinity, an old washhouse. These elements are among the architectural details through which the structure of the town can be understood: houses, the square and communal facilities are visibly interconnected.
The town center complements the churches and rock monuments with a secular perspective. While the sacred sites document individual periods and uses, the square, fountain, washhouse and the regionally typical wall materials show the spatial organization of the village.
Route and Festival Day
The Vuelta a Monte Bernorio route passes through Porquera de los Infantes; at the entrance to the town, you can view the small necropolis. As the route approaches Porquera de los Infantes, it passes through cultivated landscapes with fields. Its course therefore combines an explicitly named section of the route with views of the agriculturally shaped surroundings of the town.
Festivals are held in Porquera de los Infantes on July 16, the feast day of Nuestra Señora del Carmen. The date adds a yearly scheduled occasion in the town calendar to the permanently visible architectural and archaeological monuments.
