Astudillo – Medieval Heritage, Museums and Wineries

The Conjunto Histórico de Astudillo was protected as a cultural heritage site in the category of historic ensemble by Decree 191/1995 of 31 August. It preserves a medieval town centre with surviving sections of the city walls and one of what were formerly six city gates. Individual buildings, ruins and collections complement this town centre with various historical perspectives.

Culture

The Convento de Santa Clara-Palacio de Pedro I was founded in 1356 by María de Padilla, the mistress of King Pedro I. Part of the palace rooms has been converted into a museum. Mudéjar works, religious goldsmithery, and paintings and sculptures from the 14th to the 18th century are exhibited there. The church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles in the Convento de Santa Clara, Palacio de Pedro I, is a simple Gothic-Mudéjar church with a coffered ceiling and a Renaissance high altar featuring paintings attributed to Juan de Villoldo.

History

Construction of the Iglesia de San Pedro began in the 13th century. Its main altar was created in the last third of the 16th century by Hernando de Nestosa. The church of Santa Eugenia has been converted into the Museo Parroquial and displays artworks from the parish churches of Astudillo and the surrounding hermitages. A 4th-century mosaic from the Roman villa of El Oro can also be seen there. A network of underground galleries may have begun to be built beneath Astudillo in the Middle Ages; more than two kilometres of it have been documented.

Experiences

Two round towers and some sections of wall remain from the ruins of the Castillo de la Mota. The area around the Castillo de la Mota has been developed as a viewpoint and offers expansive views across the entire comarca. The Ruta Este de Palomares passes through Astudillo and forms part of a 10-kilometre route connecting Támara de Campos, Santoyo and Astudillo. The ten kilometres of the connection provide a clear indication of the distance for personal day planning, while the historic sites offer their own themes. The permanent Villaclick Playmobil exhibition has been located at the Albergue de Santa María (Salesianos) in Astudillo since 2024.

Wine

The traditional Bodegas de Astudillo include cellars built into La Mota and El Altillo, recalling the former importance of viticulture in the area until the recent past. The Oficina de Turismo de Astudillo offers guided tours of the historic town. An appointment must be made in advance to visit the Bodegas Astudillo.
