Landscape and Routes

The first route through the Vegas y Páramos del Camino Real begins in the centre of Monzón and leads to the old bridge over the Carrión. The first section of this route follows a four-kilometre stretch alongside the wooded river landscape of the Carrión and cultivated fields.

The Canal de Castilla runs a few metres from the municipal boundary of Monzón de Campos. North of the town lie the Castellones: an almost vertical rock face, approximately 50 metres high, created by erosion at the site of a former 10th-century castle.

Culture and History

The Castillo de Monzón de Campos stands on a hill overlooking the town of Monzón de Campos. In the Castillo de Monzón, the wedding celebrations of Queen Urraca and Alfonso the Battler, King of Aragon, were held in 1109.

The Iglesia del Salvador is located within the centre of Monzón de Campos and combines a late Romanesque construction phase from the 12th century with a later construction phase from the 15th century. It contains the Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles altarpiece from the 15th century, with 14 paintings in the Hispano-Flemish tradition and a statue of the Virgin Mary by Rodrigo de León or Alejo de Vahía.

The burial place of the Counts of Monzón was established in the Iglesia del Salvador. The transformation of the Castillo de Monzón de Campos into a large multifunctional cultural centre has begun.

At the end of the 18th century, the bridge of Monzón de Campos over the Carrión was a royal crossing that was essential for transporting building materials for the Canal de Castilla; a toll levied by Count Altamira was also paid there. The present-day bridge may have originated in the mid-16th century.

Festivals and Local Specialities

Monzón’s traditional Carajillo is an artisan liqueur made from orujo and coffee. The medieval festival La Condal takes place on the penultimate weekend of August, has been celebrated since 2002 and includes a medieval market.

At the Pesada de Nabera competition, participants estimate by eye the weight of several baskets of turnips. The San Blas festival includes a bonfire and the consumption of garlic soup.
