Culture and History

The Monumento al Minero was erected on 14 July 1975 as an architectural ensemble commemorating the mining profession and honouring miners. Its four-metre-high bronze monolith was created by the sculptor Jacinto Higueras Cátedra.

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista features Flamboyant Gothic architecture from the 16th century and preserves the Romanesque baptismal font from an older 13th-century temple. La Casa Grande, the Palacio del Arzobispo Bullón, is an 18th-century palace built in the Neoclassical and Baroque styles and designated as a BIC, or Bien de Interés Cultural.

The ruins of the Castillo de Guardo are the remains of a 9th-century fortification. It was used to control troop movements along the routes leading through Guardo via the four valleys of Valdecastro, Valdelera, Corcos and San Miguel.
