Cervera de Pisuerga: Culture, Trails and Nature

Cervera de Pisuerga is located in the Parque Natural Montaña Palentina on the right bank of the Pisuerga River. The town is bordered by the Arroyo Agüeros and Río Rivera streams; its valley is bounded by the Ruesga and Requejada reservoirs. A signposted circular trail of more than 12 kilometres connects Cervera de Pisuerga and Arbejal as well as the landscapes of Peña del Oso and Peñas Negras, and includes an accessible section.

Culture and History

The historic ensemble of Cervera de Pisuerga was designated a Cultural Heritage Site of Special Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the category of Historic Ensemble in 2010.

The Church of Santa María del Castillo dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and is predominantly designed in the Flamboyant Gothic style. Its Santa Ana Chapel houses a Hispano-Flemish altarpiece made of walnut wood, with the panel depicting the Adoration of the Magi, dated 1495. It is considered one of Juan de Flandes's masterpieces; the hand of Felipe Vigarny and León Picardo can also be recognised on the altarpiece.

The Piedad Isla Ethnographic Museum was founded in 1980 and recognised by the regional cultural authority in 1998. It displays 2,000 objects illustrating traditional life and former crafts in the surrounding villages. The permanent exhibition includes more than 300 photographs taken and collected over the years by Piedad Isla.

The Casa Museo Cantarranas is housed in an 18th-century mansion in the former Cantarranas district of Cervera de Pisuerga. Its ethnographic collections focus on extinct crafts and working methods.

Nature and Trails

The recommended direction of the Senda del Oso leads from Cervera de Pisuerga via Noria (0.7 km, 10 minutes), Arbejal (2.5 km, 50 minutes), the Embalse de Requejada reservoir (6.2 km, 2 hours) and the Chozo del Tremedal shelter (8.5 km, 2.5 hours), returning to Cervera de Pisuerga (12.2 km, 4 hours).
