Berzosilla Between Cultural Traces and Landscapes
Berzosilla can be explored through specific cultural and landscape themes. In Olleros de Paredes Rubias, medieval pottery kilns have been preserved; from the Middle Ages until the last century, a pottery industry existed there.
Culture and Crafts
Olleros de Paredes Rubias also features a house with a coat of arms and a humilladero, a wayside shrine. Ceramics dating from the 8th to the 12th century were found beside the so-called Casa del Conde, northeast of the town centre. The historical traces thus range from preserved buildings to archaeological finds and a craft tradition that continued for centuries.
The Church of San Juan Bautista is built of natural stone and has a two-bay nave with star-ribbed vaults; the main chapel is vaulted with a groin vault. Its main altar is Neoclassical and includes sculptures of Saint Michael, the Crucifixion and Saint Paul. The latter two sculptures date from the 16th century. The chapel on the Epistle side of the church dates from the first third of the 17th century.
Landscape and Regional Connections
Olleros de Paredes Rubias lies on the slope of the Páramo de la Lora. A distinctive natural landmark is the El Cornal oak, with a circumference of five metres. In the central and western Cantabrian Mountains, beech forests mark the southern boundary of the range of beech forest habitats.
Despite its administrative affiliation with the Province of Palencia, Olleros de Paredes Rubias is closely connected to Cantabria through practical links as well as a shared recent history and environment. This regional classification connects the local history of the town with a larger landscape area without equating the different administrative and cultural associations.
Routes to La Lora
On the Ebro and La Lora route, a track leads up to La Lora, covering around 240 metres of elevation gain over 1.5 kilometres. Stage 3 of the Caminos Naturales route approaches Olleros de Paredes Rubias via an old pack-animal trail that runs through pastureland and past the Fuente Vieja.
For planning your own day, route length, elevation gain and trail character can be considered side by side as different points of comparison. This makes it clear whether measurable ascent or the historic route alignment is the more important focus of a planned outing.
