Barruelo de Santullán – Mining Culture in the Nature Park

History and Culture

The development of Barruelo de Santullán was closely linked to coal mining, which left behind a significant industrial heritage. The Centro de Interpretación de la Minería combines a mining museum, a mine open to visitors, and a cultural centre.

The Museo Minero has more than 600 m² of exhibition space spread over three floors and nine halls; the tour is thematic and interactive. Advance booking is required to visit the Mina Visitable, and the visit lasts approximately one hour.

The torchlight procession to Santa Bárbara takes place at night on the eve of the celebration in honour of the patron saint of miners; participants carry torches and lamps. The Iglesia de Santo Tomás Apóstol was originally Romanesque and was rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style in the 1940s. The Romanesque period is represented there by a 12th-century figure of the Virgin and Child, several corbels, and two capitals from the triumphal arch.

Nature and Mountain Trails

Barruelo de Santullán is part of the Parque Natural Montaña Palentina. The Bosque de La Pedrosa route begins in La Pedrosa Park and follows the Rubagón River through meadows and forests with waterfalls and dense riverside vegetation.

On the route to Cueva del Cobre, the section accessible by car runs from Barruelo de Santullán via Brañosera and Salcedillo to the Refugio del Golobar, where the drive ends. The El Torreón–Alto de Valdecebollas route runs from Barruelo de Santullán along the road to Brañosera and onwards towards Salcedillo to the abandoned Refugio del Golobar, before the mountain trail continues to elevations of around 2,000 metres.

Cueva del Cobre is located at an altitude of 1,775 metres. The Pisuerga River rises at the nearby Sel de la Fuente sinkhole; signs of Quaternary glaciation can be observed there. Inside the cave, there is a main gallery through which the river flows and several side galleries, including one that is particularly long. The various driving, trail, and elevation details make the routes described comparable in terms of their layout.

Activities

The railway park is located at the former railway station of Barruelo de Santullán, which has been refurbished as a leisure centre. The locomotive shed is home to the active tourism company Barruelo Aventuras. Activities offered include hot-air balloon rides, skiing, snowshoeing, archery, buggy rides, canoeing, hiking, cycling, 4x4 activities, an adventure park, and photography tours.
