Población de Campos on the Way of St. James

The French Way of St. James passes through Población de Campos, following the central pilgrims’ route along Calle Francesa. The first section of the Way of St. James runs from Puente Fitero to Villalcázar de Sirga. A wide, paved alternative route follows the right bank of the Ucieza to Villovieco. The three route descriptions can be viewed as different reference points for planning the day.

History of the Order

The Ermita de San Miguel displays a very late Romanesque style with Gothic elements dating from around 1200. A deed of donation from 1227 suggests that it had already been built by that time. It stands outside Población de Campos at the foot of the road connecting the town with Frómista.

From 1140 until the beginning of the 19th century, Población de Campos was a territory ruled by the Order of Malta and at the same time the seat of the Bailía of the same name, also known as the Bailía of the Nine Villages of Campos. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Socorro was built in the 13th century in the late Romanesque style. It is regarded as the last surviving testament to the period when Población de Campos was under the rule of the Order of Malta, also known as the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.

Culture

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Socorro features plant-motif capital ornaments, some with masks, an anthropomorphic sarcophagus and several tomb slabs. One of the tomb slabs bears a cross reminiscent of the Cross of St. James.

River Landscape

The Río Ucieza flows through the area around Población de Campos. Near the town, a Baroque bridge dating from the 17th century spans the Río Ucieza. Población de Campos is considered to be well preserved overall; a ruin is the only exception.
