Salinas de Pisuerga: Church, Bridge and Trails along the Pisuerga
Salinas de Pisuerga lies on the right bank of the Pisuerga River. The Iglesia de San Pelayo stands there, a church with exposed stone masonry dating from the 15th to the 16th century, with three naves and Gothic star-ribbed vaults. The riverbank and architecture therefore shape two different sides of the town. The water-related surroundings also include the Pisuerga and the inflow area of the Aguilar Reservoir.
Landscape and Access
Salinas de Pisuerga lies next to the inflow area of the Aguilar Reservoir. You can reach the town via the P-212, the Reservoirs Road; Salinas de Pisuerga is located at kilometre 11 of this road. The railway stop is one kilometre from the town centre. Access is therefore available by road and by rail.
Culture and History
The medieval Puente de Salinas de Pisuerga is a 16th-century bridge with nine semicircular arches. Parks with a picnic area with tables and benches are located in its surroundings. The Ermita de Santa María de Quintanahernando lies 2 km southeast of Salinas de Pisuerga. It consists of two interconnected Late Romanesque chapels, probably dating from the 13th century. The church, bridge and chapels represent different architectural forms and periods: the church’s Gothic star-ribbed vaults are followed by the bridge’s semicircular arches and the Ermita’s interconnected Late Romanesque chapels.
Routes and Activities
The Camino Olvidado to Santiago leads to Salinas de Pisuerga and crosses the medieval bridge there towards Cervera de Pisuerga. One route begins in Salinas de Pisuerga and follows the left bank of the Pisuerga upstream to the entrance to Cervera de Pisuerga. This route can be completed on foot or by bicycle without technical difficulties. The “Pedaleando por el Románico” route is laid out differently: it passes through Salinas de Pisuerga, forms a loop of almost 60 km and has just over 1,000 m of elevation gain, as well as a difficult technical level. This places a riverside route, a technically straightforward trail and a demanding loop with different distances and elevation gains side by side.
Event
The Fiesta de la Sardinada is scheduled to take place in Salinas de Pisuerga on the first Saturday in August.
