Velilla del Río Carrión covers 200 km² and includes a large part of the Parque Natural Montaña Palentina, particularly the Alto Carrión area in the west. Nature, riverside landscapes and historic places come together here in a varied local setting. The selection of places also includes Alba De Los Cardaños.
Nature and Trails
The Pinar de Velilla route begins at a car park in the former settlement of Compuerto, 2 kilometres from Velilla del Río Carrión on the P-210 road towards Otero de Guardo. The well-marked and signposted trail ends at two viewpoints offering panoramic views of Pico Espigüete, Peña Lampa and the Compuerto Reservoir.
The Senda de los Pescadores starts at the Centro de Interpretación de la Trucha and follows the bank of the Carrión for about 3 kilometres upstream to the Puente del Ahorcado, before returning along the opposite bank. The route passes through oak stands, well-preserved riparian forests and planted pine forests; it also includes the Robledal de las Seberas oak grove.
The municipal tourism portal provides routes as printable and downloadable PDFs, with tracks for apps also available for some trails. Different route lengths as well as PDF and app-track formats can be compared side by side for your own planning.
Culture and History
La Reana is a rectangular basin made of ashlar stones, with three stone arches and three intermittent springs associated with the Fontes Tamarici of the Cantabrians. The Parque Fuentes Tamáricas-La Reana complex has been classified as a historic-artistic monument since 18 February 1960 and has the protected status of Bien de Interés Cultural.
The Ermita de San Juan de Fuentes Divinas houses a polychrome representation of Saint John from the 16th century. Iglesia El Salvador is a 16th-century church with three naves on the Plaza Mayor of Velilla del Río Carrión; its main altar has a striking covering of gold leaf.
Festivals and Local Routes
El Mayo takes place on the first Saturday in May. A pine tree up to 30 metres tall is felled, decorated and erected in the town. On 24 June, the night of the summer solstice is celebrated around the Ermita de San Juan and the La Reana spring with a large bonfire.
The August celebrations in honour of Our Lady include the Regata internacional del Carrión. La Ruta de tus Sueños offers another local perspective: the themed route through Velilla del Río Carrión follows the character Ratoncito Pérez and is also a 3.6-kilometre walk with several stops where visitors can meet Ratoncito Pérez's friends and gain insights into different corners of the town. The Ruta de los Pantanos leads to Velilla del Río Carrión.
