Villovieco on the Ucieza: Trails, Church and Local History

The French Way of St. James passes through the municipal area of Villovieco, but not through the village centre. Villovieco lies in the floodplain of the Ucieza.

Landscape

In the east, the Ucieza enters the municipal area of Villovieco and forms its southern boundary on the south side of the village centre. The municipal area and the village centre thus form two clearly distinguishable spatial levels along the Ucieza River.

Trails

When leaving Villovieco, the Way of St. James crosses the Ucieza and then follows its left bank for approximately 1 km. A wide, paved route runs parallel to the course of the Ucieza and leads to Villovieco. The approximately 1 km-long riverside section and the wide, paved parallel route describe different types of paths along the Ucieza; the different details can be distinguished by length, course and condition.

The road layout provides another geographical reference: a third-order regional road connects the P-980 near Revenga de Campos with the P-981 at the level of Arconada. It runs from south to north along the western edge of the village centre. On a map, the river, paths and road appear side by side as different lines of orientation.

Culture

Historically, Villovieco had a hospital for the poor and travellers. It was dedicated to Nuestra Señora, San Sebastián, San Roque and Todos los Santos. These four dedications are therefore among the surviving details of this former social institution.

The parish church of Iglesia de Nuestra Señora Santa María is a late-Renaissance church building. Its main altarpiece dates from the 17th century. The main altarpiece also contains allusions to the Battle of Clavijo, so the period of construction and the pictorial theme come together in the same church interior.

The Exaltación de la Santa Cruz is a patronal festival held on 3 May. The village landscape also includes traditional cellars dug into the hillside. The festival tradition and this distinctive form of cellar add two further independent aspects to the ecclesiastical and architectural details.

The Monumento al Peregrino is located near the Ucieza and the southern village centre of Villovieco.
