Vidrieros combines mountain landscapes, a river course and local history. Valle de Pineda and Pozo Curavacas

A footpath follows the Arroyo del Ves, climbing between the cascades to Pozo Curavacas. The cascades along the route are known as Escaleras del Ves; Pozo Curavacas is a lake of glacial origin. Shepherds’ huts reflecting regional tradition are scattered across the meadows of the Valle de Pineda.

Access to Pozo Curavacas through the Valle de Pineda is 18 km from Vidrieros; the track is passable by four-wheel-drive vehicles to near the lake. The 19 kilometres each way of the hiking route and the 18 kilometres to the access point for Pozo Curavacas are therefore different distance figures.

Cycling route, gorge and historic trails

The “El Carrión salvaje – Valle de Pineda” cycling route starts and ends at the car park in Vidrieros and initially follows the Carrión upstream along its right bank. It reaches the Estrecho, a gorge opened by the glacier and enlarged by river erosion, and then climbs through the Vega de los Cantos to a junction. From there, trails lead to Pozo Curavacas, Laguna de Fuentes Carrionas and the passes of Riofrío. Above Vidrieros, a route also ran through the Valle de Pineda that later served as a royal road and livestock drovers’ route, connecting the valley with Liébana via the Valle de Arauz.

Church, chapel and old mill

In the 12th century, the settlement stood beside the newly built Church of San Martín de Tours. The entrance portal of the Church of San Martín in Vidrieros displays Gothic features with Romanesque influences and probably dates from the second half of the 13th century. A cross of Celtic origin is kept in the village chapel of Vidrieros. The old mill of Vidrieros is an ethnographic building that illustrates an earlier craft and ways of life from the past.
