History and Culture

The Roman road Vía Romana II-1 ran from east to west through the municipality of Santibáñez de la Peña. From San Román de Entrepeñas, the remains of walls, a bridge over a stream and a Romanesque tower are visible about 1,000 metres north of the town centre of Santibáñez de la Peña. San Román de Entrepeñas is one of the earliest monastic foundations in the province and was a mandatory stop for medieval pilgrims.

The Castro de la Loma was the setting for the legendary Cantabrian Wars. The Castro de la Loma is designed for a free, self-guided tour with explanatory panels. Santibáñez de la Peña has a Romanesque church under the patronage of Saint John the Baptist. The Santuario de la Virgen del Brezo lies in the heart of the Sierra del Brezo at an altitude of 1,400 metres.

The national “Loas a la Virgen del Brezo” competition includes an eighth edition.
