Lomas: Birdlife, Views and History

An section of the Ruta Ornitológica de la ZEPA runs through Lomas de Campos; its entire route lies within the “Camino de Santiago” Special Protection Area for Birds. Nature

The Torre-Mirador de San Cristóbal is considered a birdwatching spot for great bustards. The Mirador de Lomas de Campos was inaugurated in 2011 next to the former church of San Cristóbal.

Culture

The first documented mention of the parish church of San Cristóbal in Lomas appears in a charter issued by Alfonso VI on 25 November 1093. The church of San Cristóbal in Lomas de Campos houses polychrome wooden carvings of Saint Anne and Saint Christopher dating from the 16th century. Its vaults preserve coats of arms from the 17th century associated with the Farjado, Lomas and Guevara families.

At the entrance to the Capilla de Santa Ana, the year 1957 is given in Roman numerals. The Capilla de Santa Ana houses a very old polychrome wooden carving of Saint Anne, which returned to its place above the main altar on 12 June 2011 after restoration. The small bell in the Capilla de Santa Ana is the only surviving relic of the four bells from the old bell tower of San Cristóbal.

The Torre-Mirador of Lomas de Campos features an exhibition intended to raise awareness of the landscape of Tierra de Campos, the stars and birdlife. The Mirador de Lomas de Campos is included in the Tierra de Campos viewpoint route named “Vigías del Mar de Campos”.

History

The Fuente Muñoz spring recalls the area where the Battle of Golpejera was fought; at the same time, the local ornithological route includes a spring at the site of the former settlement of Fuente Muñoz. Local memories of the Battle of Golpejera are associated with Lomas and Villarmentero de Campos on the left bank of the Camino de Santiago.

The dovecotes in Lomas de Campos and other places in Tierra de Campos are considered a striking example of the province’s characteristic vernacular architecture. Lomas’s traditional festival calendar includes a summer festival on Saint Anne’s Day and another festival on the third weekend of September.

Getting There

From Palencia, you can reach Lomas via the C-615 to Villoldo and then along the P-981 towards Santillana. Lomas is 4 kilometres from Villoldo, before Villalcázar de Sirga.
