Herrera de Valdecañas – Church, Circular Route and River Floodplains
Herrera de Valdecañas is home to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, which was built in 1577. The ermita is the only one of the hermitages formerly mentioned in Herrera de Valdecañas that has survived.
Geographical setting
Herrera de Valdecañas lies on the slope of a high plateau above the Arlanzón Valley. Only two roads lead to the town: one from Quintana del Puente and another from the junction with the A-62. There are natural stands of thyme in the surrounding area. It also includes the floodplains of the Arlanzón and Pisuerga rivers, as well as agricultural land.
Culture
A significant Roman villa once stood at the Santa Lucía site in the municipality of Herrera de Valdecañas. The Iglesia de Santa Cecilia stands on a slope in the highest part of Herrera de Valdecañas, directly below the area of the town with the bodegas.
The Iglesia de Santa Cecilia preserves original structural elements dating from the 13th or 14th century, which were modified in the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1945, it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. Inside are Baroque works, a Gothic Christ from the 13th century, a Rococo work by José Pastrana, a 13th-century tomb and sculptures from the 16th century.
The Virgen de los Remedios festival in Herrera de Valdecañas takes place on the second weekend of August. As part of the San Isidro patron saint celebrations, a procession with the saint took place on Thursday, 15 May, after Mass at the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios.
Routes
The Ruta Temática Cerrato is a 38-kilometre circular route that passes through Herrera de Valdecañas, Hornillos de Cerrato and Valdecañas de Cerrato. It can be completed by bicycle or on foot. The route runs between striking hills, Mediterranean forests, pine forests, oak forests and cultivated fields. Its length and the two aforementioned ways of travelling provide a clear framework when comparing the scope and type of an excursion.
