Villamuriel de Cerrato: Canal, Monastery and Festivals

In the centre of Villamuriel de Cerrato is Lock 33 of the Canal de Castilla. The lock was the first industrial work by the modernist architect Jerónimo Arroyo and was built in 1901. Along the Canal de Castilla, there is only one location with an oval lock and two consecutive rectangular locks. A Gothic bridge stands over the Río Carrión, with the first documented reference to it dating from the 14th century. Festivals

The Fiestas de la Ascensión take place on the weekend closest to Ascension Thursday, usually in May, and commemorate the “Milagro de la Cera” that took place in 1601. Today, the fiestas include a mass, a procession and short poems recited from memory from the balcony of the town hall. For scheduling purposes, it is not only the month that matters here, but also the proximity to Ascension Thursday; at the same time, the festival tradition differs clearly from the permanent architectural and natural areas.
