In Villaherreros, the Iglesia de San Román has early Romanesque origins, but was substantially altered during the Gothic period. Its main altar includes a sculpture of Saint Román and a tabernacle attributed to Manuel Álvarez, a student of Juan de Juni. The Ermita de San Millán houses an altarpiece from the first third of the 17th century with a sculpture of Saint Millán.

Culture and History

At Plaza del Campillo, a noble house preserves the family coat of arms on the split gable above the balcony. The building was erected after Pedro Ruiz del Trejo ordered the demolition of his parents’ houses that stood there. Another historical trace leads to today’s Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Vallarna: it was built later than the former parish church of Santa María in the completely vanished settlement of Vallarna and does not stand at its former location. At the same time, the ermita may be connected with this former church.

Festivals

San Isidro is celebrated on May 15 with a procession carrying the saint’s image through Villaherreros and a snack for all residents. The San Pedro festival on June 29 includes a traditional communal meal at the Bodegas de San Pedro, as well as public activities held over several days. The Fiesta del Agua on August 15 combines a communal paella, a water fight and inflatable castles.

On August 16, the San Roque festival combines a mass at the Ermita de San Millán, a communal meal and a bonfire. San Román is celebrated on November 18 with children’s games, youth activities, music and dancing, as well as a mass. The different dates and types of events create distinct focal points ranging from religious traditions and communal meals to convivial village life.

Routes and Landscape

The Ruta de Murales has an illustrated map locating 14 murals in Villaherreros and inviting visitors to take a walk through this open-air artwork. A side route of the Camino de Santiago passes through Villaherreros, following the N-120. The Bodegas de San Pedro can be accessed via the Cordel Cerverano of the Cañada Real Leonesa, a historic livestock trail.

From Alto de las Bodegas de San Pedro, on clear days it is possible to see some peaks of the Montaña Palentina as well as various surrounding places. The A-231 León–Burgos motorway passes through Villaherreros; the section running there has been in operation since 2001.
