Discover Moratinos on the Camino de Santiago

The Camino de Santiago Francés passes through Moratinos, and the village is one of the last places in the Palencia section of the Camino de Santiago. Culture

Moratinos is mentioned as a settlement in the documentation of Sahagún in 955. An important building in the village is the parish church of Santo Tomás de Aquino. It is dedicated to Saint Thomas Aquinas and was built between the 16th and 17th centuries.

Its architectural form includes a single-nave layout and a brick exterior. The nave has a flat ceiling; above the presbytery is a shallow dome. These features give the church interior a clearly describable architectural structure that can be distinguished from the furnishings inside.

Inside the church of Santo Tomás de Aquino are several altarpieces from different periods and in different styles. On the Gospel side of the church of Santo Tomás de Aquino stands a sculpture of Saint Roch. The sacristy also contains an image of the Virgin Mary with the Child created in the 16th century. Thus, in Santo Tomás de Aquino, the architectural form, altarpieces shaped by different periods and individual works of art stand side by side. The church interior can therefore be understood not only through its external form, but also through the sequence and variety of its furnishings.

Landscape

On the slope of a low hill in Moratinos lies a group of traditional wine cellars, typical structures of this landscape. The wine cellars complement the historical and ecclesiastical features with an independent architectural connection to the landscape.

There are pilgrims’ hostels and a rest area in the surrounding area of Moratinos. The road in Moratinos known as the Calzada Real or French is closely connected with the Camino de Santiago. Different spatial connections therefore emerge in the surrounding area: the wine cellars on the slope, the road in the village and the facilities for pilgrims in the vicinity. Geographical setting

Moratinos is located on the N-120 road. The A-231 motorway, which connects León with Burgos, lies north of Moratinos. Travelling by road from Palencia to Moratinos initially takes you along the CL-613. The village’s direct road connection, the motorway link to the north and the route from Palencia described above constitute three different spatial connections.
