Villarmentero de Campos: Church Art and the Camino de Santiago

Villarmentero de Campos lies in the Tierra de Campos landscape, on one of the gentle slopes of the hilly terrain. In 1229, Villarmentero bore the epithet “del Camino”. The Camino de Santiago Francés passes through the municipality of Villarmentero de Campos. The historic epithet and the present-day route of the Camino de Santiago are therefore among the municipality’s defining connections.

Landscape

The Río Ucieza touches the municipality of Villarmentero de Campos to the north and east of the town. Along the left bank of the Río Ucieza, a route variant of the Camino de Santiago follows a path through Tierra de Campos and riparian woodland with willows, poplars and black poplars. At this section of the route, the gentle forms of the hilly terrain meet the riverbank and the groups of trees in the riparian woodland. Open landscapes and wooded riverbank areas therefore alternate along the route described.

Routes

Villarmentero de Campos can be reached via the P-980, a minor road that coincides with the Camino de Santiago. The bridge over the Río Ucieza in Villarmentero de Campos had already been repaired in 2026 after it had posed a danger to vehicles, pedestrians and pilgrims. The road, pilgrimage route and river crossing are thus described as interconnected components of the local road and path network. The P-980 and the Camino de Santiago are not separate points of reference here; rather, they coincide along this minor road.

History

A hospital belonging to the Cofradía de la Vera Cruz was located on Calle Francesa in the centre of Villarmentero. This confraternity was affiliated with the Archicofradía de San Martín. The hospital, Calle Francesa and the two confraternities are concrete traces of the town centre’s historical pilgrimage and community history.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Martín de Tours is built of stone and adobe clay and has a single-nave church body as well as a portico covered by a wooden coffered ceiling from the 16th century. The church’s main altarpiece includes six 16th-century oil paintings on wood by Juan de Villoldo, as well as sculptures by Francisco de Giralte. The construction method, spatial form and furnishings originate from different artistic contexts: stone and adobe clay define the building, while the nave, portico, coffered ceiling, paintings and sculptures structure the church interior in greater detail. The six oil paintings on wood and the works by Juan de Villoldo form a distinct part of the main altarpiece; the sculptures by Francisco de Giralte complement these furnishings.

Festivals and Surroundings

The festival in honour of San Martín de Tours takes place on 11 November. The festival date is therefore linked to the name of the church and to the patronage of San Martín de Tours.

The Monasterio De San Zoilo monastery is located in the surroundings of Villarmentero de Campos. The Abadía de Santa María de Benevívere, the Iglesia de Santiago and the Iglesia De San Esteban are also located nearby. Together with the Iglesia de San Martín de Tours, the monastery, abbey and churches form the religiously themed sights in the wider area. Each of the named buildings stands as a separate destination and broadens the view beyond the single parish church.
