Mudá: Holiday Apartment Amid Church Art and the Montaña Palentina

Mudá is located in the Montaña Palentina. Remains of prehistoric settlements have been found in the caves of Mudá. These two starting points offer a glimpse into a place whose cultural traces and landscape become legible across different periods and in different forms.

Culture and History

The apse of the Ermita del Oteruelo preserves several 15th-century murals. In the Iglesia parroquial de San Martín in Mudá, a Baroque altarpiece from the 18th century preserves a depiction of Saint Martin from the 16th century. These two examples of sacred heritage can be understood as distinct historical points of reference.

After the end of the invasions by the Cantabrian and Suebi peoples, Mudá was built as a fortress in the late 5th and 6th centuries and served as a place of residence for the Visigoths. Until the year 811, Mudá was the political center of the region, including Cervera de Pisuerga.

From the end of the 19th century through the entire 20th century, Mudá had significant coal mines, whose decline eventually led to a crisis. The town's history can therefore be viewed through clearly distinct focal points: an early medieval fortress, political importance, and later mining.

Landscape and Trails

The Virgen de la Peña is a defining feature of Mudá. The Peña, known as “el humano,” with its viewpoint, rises above the built-up area of Mudá. For personal orientation, the townscape and this prominent natural feature can be considered as two different perspectives side by side.

The San Martín de Perapertú–Mudá route passes rocky outcrops and runs between pastures, dense oak forests, and riverside vegetation along the streams. The sequence of rock, pastureland, oak forest, and stream bank makes the thematic character of this route immediately comparable.

Festivals Throughout the Year

In Mudá, the patron saint's festival in honor of Saint Michael is celebrated on September 29. On November 11, the patron saint's festival in honor of Saint Martin is celebrated. The Romería de Nuestra Señora de los Oteruelos is scheduled for August 14 and 15, and the Fiesta de la Amistad for the third weekend in August.

These dates provide different time windows for personal planning, without the festivals coinciding as a single event.

Getting There

The center of Mudá can be reached via the P-212 road, which branches off in Cervera de Pisuerga. At Rueda de Pisuerga, the northern turnoff leads onto the PP-2125, which goes to Barruelo de Santullán. The two road connections can be considered separately when planning your own route.
