Cevico de la Torre: Holiday Apartment Amid Landscape and History
Cevico de la Torre lies on the lower part of the slope of a spur separating the Maderano Valley from the Arroyo Valle de Cerrato Valley.
Landscape
At the summit and on the edge of the mountain stands the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Rasedo at an altitude of 876 metres; from there, the broad valley can be surveyed. Classified as a pastoral monument, the El Dragón complex comprises a hut, three livestock pens and two circular enclosures connected by a corridor. North of Cevico de la Torre, on the slopes of the Castillo and Cueva Grande elevations, there are primitive dwellings dug into the earth.
Culture
On a hill in the town centre stands the Iglesia de San Martín, built in the Renaissance style at the end of the 16th century. In the centre of the town is the Ermita de Santa Ana, a 17th-century single-nave temple with a transept; its stone façade dates from 1730, while the vaults feature Baroque stucco decoration. At the entrance to the town is La Samaritana, a Modernist cast-iron sculpture erected in 1903 by the French sculptor Alberte Carrier Belleuse. The Casa Fuerte Medieval, also known locally as the Palacio de los Uñate, probably originated in the 14th century; it had four towers and a rubble-stone wall. The Museo La Casa del Abuelo is a private ethnographic house museum. Using old objects, it reconstructs a house from 1863 as well as the work and way of life of earlier generations.
History
Archaeological remains in the hills northeast of the town centre suggest that the municipal area was already inhabited in Celtiberian times. Roman silver coins have also been found in Cevico de la Torre, including denarii of Julius Caesar, Tiberius and Caligula.
In spring and summer, Bodegas y Cuevas is a leisure area for eating and drinking as well as a meeting place; during the village festivities, the area is also visited by the peñas. Bodegas y Cuevas is associated with the work of the grape harvest in autumn. During the celebrations, a typical jota ceviqueña is danced in honour of the alabaster statue Nuestra Señora del Rasedo, a figure dating from the 16th century. Access to the Iglesia de San Martín is via a staircase with 96 steps. During the procession, Danzantes accompany the procession, dance at the altars and dance their way up these steps. During the Romería, the Virgen del Rasedo is returned in procession to its Ermita; the procession is led by a traditional wagon procession.
