Itero de la Vega on the Camino de Santiago – Holiday Apartment and Local History

Itero de la Vega lies on a gently rolling plain on the right bank of the Pisuerga and its tributary, the Vallarna. At the same time, it is the first town that the pilgrimage route passes through in the province of Palencia; pilgrims reach Itero de la Vega via the bridge known as Puente Fitero.

Landscape and Route

The section of the Camino de Santiago from Itero de la Vega to Frómista is 13.8 km long. For travel by car, the N-611 Santander road is recommended, with a turnoff near Frómista to the east.

Culture and History

Puente Fitero has eleven stone arches spanning the River Pisuerga. Beside Puente Itero stood a hospital dedicated to Saint John, founded before 1174 by Count Nuño Pérez de Lara.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Piedad was built in the 13th century in a transitional style leading to Gothic architecture and retains Romanesque elements. It has a bell gable, an espadaña, dating from the 14th century. The chapel also houses an image of Santiago Peregrino.

The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol is divided into three naves separated by pillars. The central nave has a quadripartite rib vault, while the side naves and the main chapel have barrel vaults with lunettes. The church contains two Baroque altarpieces and a Renaissance altarpiece from the mid-16th century, as well as a crucifix from the same period and sculptures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. A Gothic portal bears witness to its medieval past.

The Rollo de Justicia was erected in 1529. This Renaissance monument was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1966.

Festivals and Sports

The patron-saint celebrations of Virgen de la Piedad take place on September 8. They include a Mass in the chapel and a procession during which the image of the Virgin is displayed.

The 16th edition of the “Palencia Legua a Legua” running series also passed through Itero de la Vega. In this edition, the main races were open to all sports enthusiasts, regardless of whether they belonged to an association.
