Culture
The new church of San Xoán de Tabagón was built from 1804 onwards. Construction of this church building was completed in September 1816.
On 11 July 1820, the parish of San Xoán de Tabagón was definitively separated from the parishes of San Miguel de Tabagón and As Eiras and dedicated to John the Baptist.
The parish church of San Xoán de Tabagón is a late Mannerist church made of hewn granite. Its ground plan is rectangular, and its nave has a single aisle. The main chapel of this parish church has a stone groin vault.
The Calvario de Tabagón, an ethnographic wayside cross, stands at O Cruceiro in San Miguel de Tabagón. It is located at a viewpoint overlooking the estuary of the Miño.
The parish church of San Miguel de Tabagón has an 18th-century façade. Its tower also dates from this century.
The two churches reflect different historical periods: San Xoán de Tabagón connects its construction period from 1804 onwards with the later development of the parish, while San Miguel de Tabagón is distinguished by architectural elements from the 18th century in its façade and tower. At the Calvario de Tabagón, the location of O Cruceiro and the view of the Miño estuary are additional named features.
La Casa Taller, a museum, is located in the surroundings of Tabagón. The Museo do Mar is also located in the surroundings of Tabagón and is a museum.
Praia Fedorento is located in the surroundings of Tabagón and is a beach. Praia de Camposancos is also located in the same surroundings and is likewise a beach. Praia de Moledo is also located in the surroundings of Tabagón and is a beach.
The island of Morraceira João de Sá is located in the immediate vicinity of Tabagón. Forte da Lagardeira, a fortress, and Anta da Barrosa, a historic site, are also located in the surroundings of Tabagón.
Thus, the area around Tabagón offers not only religious buildings but also museums, beaches, an island, a fortress and a historic site. The geographical references differ: Morraceira João de Sá is in the immediate vicinity, while the other destinations mentioned are in the surroundings of Tabagón.
Other places: As Mariñas, Salcidos, Carbia, Virxe Das Mareas, A Escardia, Meaño, Camposancos, Lalín
Traditions
The main parish festival of San Xoán de Tabagón combines the celebrations of Virxe da Saúde and San Brais. It takes place on 2 and 3 February.
Erecting the Arco de San Brais is a tradition of the residents of San Xoán de Tabagón. This tradition has been repeated for generations.
The celebration on 2 February and the erection of the Arco de San Brais are therefore among the explicitly handed-down customs of San Xoán de Tabagón. The connection to the local residents and the repetition over generations give this tradition a clear local context.
The Cruceiro dos Maios was created in 1879. The stonemason Manuel González Perdiz was responsible; he worked on commission from the parish priest D. Xosé Benito Fernández.
The Cruceiro dos Maios bears relief depictions of the instruments of Christ’s Passion.
The Cruceiro dos Maios therefore preserves both the year of its creation, 1879, and the names of the stonemason who executed it and the parish priest who commissioned it. The relief depictions add a visible characteristic of the cross to this information.
