Salcidos brings together intangible cultural heritage, religious buildings, the history of ceramics, and routes leading to the Miño. Particularly distinctive is the secret language of the Cabaqueiros from Salcidos, which forms part of the intangible cultural heritage. The cultural trail therefore does not begin with a single building, but with a distinctive tradition passed down through the history of the place.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Lorenzo de Salcidos was supported in the 16th century by the parish priest D. Álvaro Ozores de Sotomayor. Its main chapel was built in 1760. The Capilla das Mercedes is located in the A Gándara district of the parish of Salcidos. The chapel dedicated to the Virgen de las Mercedes was inaugurated in 1918. The religious buildings mentioned here therefore reflect different historical periods: the church dates back to the 16th century, its main chapel has its own construction date in 1760, and the chapel of the Virgen de las Mercedes was added in the 20th century.

In front of the façade of the Santuario de San Roque de Salcidos stands an ornate wayside cross from the 18th century. The parish of Salcidos also contains a monumental ensemble consisting of a wayside cross, a soul offering box, and a stele. Such small religious monuments stand alongside the larger religious buildings and broaden the view of the local building and commemorative culture.

In Juncal-Ribera de Salcidos are the restored remains of an old and significant industrial ceramics complex dating from between 1850 and 1895. Two ceramic kilns in the parish of Salcidos have also recently been restored. Thus, alongside the church, chapel, and wayside cross, industrial relics and ceramic processing are also tangible traces of the culture.

Nature and Routes along the Miño

In the Miño estuary, the majority of the hundred bird species that live there or spend the winter there are concentrated at the birdwatching sites. These sites can be reached via a route near Salcidos. The PR-G160 Ruta Desembocadura del Miño begins a few metres from the parish church of Salcidos and leads to the banks of the Miño, where the birdwatching sites are located.

The marked PR-G160 Ruta Desembocadura del Miño is 7 km long along its main route. When planning such a route, the stated length and the specific course are the key factors; current route conditions should be checked before setting out. The Camino Portugués de la Costa also runs for 9 km through the municipality of A Guarda. This route is considered to pass through varied landscapes and to have a low level of difficulty. At 9 km, it is longer than the 7 km main route of the PR-G160.

Among the cultural destinations, religious buildings, small monuments, and ceramics sites stand side by side; among the routes, 7 and 9 km represent two differently long stretches. Opening hours or current information about places visited should be checked before the trip.

Other places: Barro, Ribadumia, Salceda, Campelo, Nigrán, Bandeira, Picoto, A Illa De Arousa.
