Barro: Petrographs, Portuguese Way and Festa do Viño

The Petroglifos Bazar route in Barro is 3 km long in total and takes approximately 35 minutes. Along its course, it leads to three sites with prehistoric art.

The Portuguese Way crosses Barro from south to north, running between the Río Rons and the Río Agra. The fourth stage of the Portuguese Way runs from Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis, is a little over 21 km long, and covers the entire section through Barro.

The two routes reveal different time scales within Barro: the Petrographs Route focuses on three sites and an approximate duration of 35 minutes, while the fourth stage of the Way incorporates the entire section through the municipality into a route of a little over 21 km. In this way, prehistoric art and the pilgrimage route each take center stage with their own local and route-related connections.

Nature and Water

The Parque da Natureza do Río Barosa comprises a group of 17 watermills. The PR-G 105 Sendeiro dos Muíños de Barosa is located in the same park.

The park is an important stop on the Portuguese Way as it passes through the municipality of Barro. At the Salto de Auga do Río Barosa, the Barosa River forms a waterfall 650 meters to the right of the Way, with a series of small cascades over granite rocks.

Monte de Güimil offers views of the sea and large parts of Salnés, as well as a wooded recreational area with tables for outdoor activities.

Culture

The Igrexa de San Martiño de Agudelo is a well-preserved example of Romanesque art; the ornamentation of its façade is attributed to the Compostelan school of Mestre Mateo.

Its semicircular Romanesque apse from the 12th century is divided into five bays with three windows.

The Igrexa de San Breixo de Barro stands in the village of Barro on a hill surrounded by a broad plain.

Peto de Ánimas de Porráns is an ethnographic heritage site in Porráns, Barro (San Breixo).

The Pazo da Crega usually hosts concerts, processions, and fairs, including the traditional Festa do Viño de Barro, which was founded in 1979 and has since developed into a recurring summer wine festival.

Festivals and Wine

The Romaría de San Breixo is celebrated on the first Sunday in October in the parish of Barro.

The area's wineries mainly produce wines made from the Albariño and Caíño tinto grape varieties.

The wines from Barro would be classified within the Rías Baixas designation of origin under the Salnés subzone.
