Nature

Goián lies on the Miño and combines a river landscape with paths along the water. The international Ponte da Amizade connects Goián with Vila Nova de Cerveira. Its pedestrian promenade offers views of the Miño and its banks. The bridge itself is therefore one of the distinctive features of the landscape, while the Senda do Miño forms a second connection between places along the river.

The Senda do Miño runs from Praia de Goián beach in Tomiño to Praia de Eiras beach in O Rosal. Praia de Goián is equipped for swimming and also has a large recreational area. Thus, along this section of the Miño, a named path, two beaches and a specially designed area by the water come together.

Culture

The Pazo-Casa Forte dos Correa (Casa da Torre) is an example of Baroque Galician pazo architecture. Its history is closely linked to the Portuguese Restoration War. The building was erected in the 17th century and rebuilt in the 18th century after a devastating fire resulting from the Portuguese invasion. Its architecture, construction period and history connected with the war are directly intertwined here.

The present-day church of San Cristovo de Goián was built in 1746. The church building displays late Manueline features and has three naves. Its construction period and distinctive architectural character therefore form an independent historical reference point within Goián.

Living traditions are also part of the local character. Treboada Os da Fonte do Frade from Goián is one of four Treboadas in Tomiño. The Entroido of Goián has a history dating back more than a hundred years. Both references anchor Goián in Tomiño’s traditional festivals and customs.

History

The surroundings of the Fortaleza de San Lourenzo in Goián were restored for public use as part of the enhancement of this cultural heritage site. At Punto Fortaleza, guided visits by canoe, bicycle or on foot can be arranged. Espazo Fortaleza was opened to the public in summer 2012.

The “Castros, muíños e sambenitos” route leads to Tomiño in the area of the Galician Miño estuary to visit the Fortaleza de Goián (Fortaleza de San Lourenzo). The route’s name refers to its three components, while its destination is clearly identified as the fortress in Goián.

Different historical traces therefore stand side by side at the Miño estuary: the Baroque Pazo-Casa Forte dos Correa, the church of San Cristovo de Goián, the fortress and the traditional festivals. Each place and tradition preserves its own temporal and cultural context.
