Viascón – Routes, Petroglyphs and River Swimming

Route A Vía Escondida PRG-68 starts from Viascón; near Cabanelas, it passes river swimming spots and a recreation area.

Hiking and Nature

Along this route, the trail leads to the Coto do Ramalloso viewpoint. The route also reaches the Portela da Laxe petroglyph site. Near Viascón, the route follows the Lérez River, which is part of the Natura 2000 network.

The trail therefore connects various landscape features within a named route: the river section near Viascón, the swimming spots near Cabanelas and the Coto do Ramalloso viewpoint. The Portela da Laxe petroglyph site is also located along this route and adds an archaeological destination to the natural area.

Culture and History

Laxe das Rodas do Lombo da Costa can be reached from the N-541 via a 400-metre stretch of steep forest track.

The Igrexa de Santiago de Viascón was built in 1892. Its floor plan has the shape of a Latin cross, and the chapel has a vaulted ceiling. If you are coming from the N-541 in the direction of Ourense, turn off 3 kilometres after Tenorio and continue for another 200 metres to the Igrexa de Santiago de Viascón.

Different information is recorded for the two cultural destinations: Laxe das Rodas do Lombo da Costa lies along a 400-metre-long, steep forest track from the N-541, while the Igrexa de Santiago de Viascón can be reached via the turn-off to Tenorio and the following 200 metres. This keeps the route details and the church’s construction history distinct.

Laxe das Coutadas is a group of engravings on a domed outcrop of medium-grained granite. This outcrop measures 12.60 metres in length and 3.40 metres in width. The engravings at Laxe das Coutadas combine concentric circles with zoomorphic motifs, including deer.

At Laxe das Coutadas, the shape of the granite outcrop is therefore also part of the description of the cultural monument. The measurements of 12.60 metres in length and 3.40 metres in width refer to this domed outcrop; the motifs themselves are characterised by concentric circles and zoomorphic depictions, including deer.

Leisure

The Cabanelas river bathing area in Viascón provides access to the river swimming area and an accessible entrance. The bathing area also includes a recreation area with children’s play equipment.

Ecoparque Atalaia is an outdoor leisure and adventure centre. Its activities include paintball, river kayaking and rafting. There are also BTT circuits and routes, as well as horse rides and riding routes. Other activities on offer include hiking, trekking, orienteering and multi-adventure games.

The leisure activities therefore range from water-based activities, BTT and riding routes to hiking, trekking, orienteering and multi-adventure games. Paintball is also mentioned. At the Cabanelas river bathing area, however, the focus is on access to the river swimming area, the accessible entrance and the recreation area with children’s play equipment.

The Festa de Santiago Apóstol is celebrated in Viascón on 25 July. The Festa da Virxe de Lourdes is celebrated in Viascón on the fourth weekend of August.
