Discover A Guarda: Monte Santa Trega, Coastal Paths and Culture

The Festas do Monte, which have existed for centuries, include a traditional pilgrimage to Monte Santa Trega.

Culture and History

The Museo Arqueolóxico Monte Santa Trega, or MASAT for short, was founded in 1917. In 1953, it was moved to its present building at the castro on the summit of Monte Santa Trega.

Castelo de Santa Cruz has an irregular polygonal ground plan. Four bastions project from the walls of the fortress.

At Castelo de Santa Cruz, an interpretation centre explains the role of the fortress in the cross-border system of bastioned fortifications.

The La Casa Taller Museum is located in the vicinity of A Guarda. The Museo do Mar is also located nearby.

The Forte da Lagardeira fortress is located in the area around A Guarda. The historic site of Anta da Barrosa is located in the same area.

The Festa da Langosta e da Cociña Mariñeira takes place in the port of A Guarda. There, visitors can sample lobsters and other seafood dishes.

The historic sites represent different forms of cultural heritage: the pilgrimage is part of a tradition that has existed for centuries, while museums, fortresses and the historic site preserve different testimonies to the local history.

Paths and Coast

The PR-G 122 Camiños do Trega is a 7.7-kilometre network of paths. It includes a 1.9-kilometre main route and 5.8 kilometres of variants.

The PR-G 160 Ruta da Desembocadura do Miño runs entirely along flat terrain beside the Miño. The well-developed path crosses reed beds, rocky areas and beaches.

The area crossed by the PR-G 160 Ruta da Desembocadura do Miño is catalogued as L.I.C. Baixo Miño and Z.E.P.A. Esteiro do Miño.

The Blue Path is a 5.6-kilometre linear coastal path. It connects O Muíño and Area Grande beaches via the fishing port of A Guarda.

Thus, the described landscapes along the paths extend from Monte Santa Trega via the coast to the Miño Estuary. The route along the river connects reed beds, rocks and beaches, while the Blue Path links the two aforementioned beaches via the port.

Nature and Views

The Santa Trega viewpoint offers a 360-degree view of the Miño Estuary. From there, the view also extends to the coasts of Galicia and Portugal.

Praia Fedorento beach is located in the vicinity of A Guarda. Praia de Camposancos beach is also located nearby.

Praia de Moledo beach is located in the area around A Guarda. O Muíño beach lies at the mouth of the Miño.
