O Rosal: Petroglyphs, Mills and River Trails

In O Rosal, the Petróglifos de Ghorghalado include more than 300 prehistoric engravings. They are estimated to be 3,000 to 4,500 years old and are attributed to the Copper to Bronze Age.

Culture and History

O Rosal is regarded as the birthplace of the Cabaqueiros craft tradition; a monument commemorating it stands in the central Praza do Calvario. The Museo do Cabaqueiro is located on the ground floor of the Cámara Agraria at Rúa Ramón Franco 2 in O Rosal.

The Igrexa de Santa Mariña contains a high altar retable. It is designed in the Baroque style and shows a strong Portuguese influence. The Muíños do Folón e do Picón in Santa Mariña, O Rosal, are protected as a cultural asset of particular interest in the category of an ethnographic site of interest.

The Mina Galaico-Romana de As Bornas is a Gallaecian-Roman archaeological site. It is associated with the intensive exploitation of mineral resources during the Roman presence in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The Puente de Tamuxe is an approximately 51-metre-long granite bridge of Roman origin with three flattened arches over the Tamuxe River.

Trails and Nature

The Sendeiro de Pescadores runs through riverside forests as well as estuary and reed areas. Its route includes areas of ornithological interest. The trail also passes historic bridges, a steam-powered sawmill, hydraulic mills and several recreational areas.

The PR-G 94 Ruta dos Muíños do Folón e do Picón route passes through native and reforested woodland. It also runs through areas with typical riverside vegetation. Three species of carnivorous plants occur there, some of which are protected.

The Fervenzas do Folón e Picón form on two tributaries of the Tamuxe River. The Tamuxe descends from Monte San Martiño and forms several waterfalls over granite formations.

Riverbanks and Waterways

Two hiking trails run along the riverbank from Praia das Eiras. The 7.5-kilometre PR-G 112 Sendeiro de Pescadores Miño-Tamuxe leads to Muíño das Aceñas. The short trail along the Tollo River runs towards Goián and is connected to the neighbouring municipality of Tomiño.

Visitors can rent kayaks in O Rosal. On the Miño, they can use them to reach small islands between the riverbanks. It is also possible to enter the Tamuxe River.

The area around the Mina Galaico-Romana de As Bornas is part of a network of hiking trails. These trails provide opportunities to discover further heritage sites and the landscape of Baixo Miño.

Wine and Local Tradition

Some wineries in O Rosal allow visitors to learn about grape cultivation, the harvest and winemaking.
